Re-campaign at 5Vie - Cavallerize

turning giant advertising banners into a walk-through colour portal

At Milan Design Week 2026, studio mo man tai transforms used advertising banners into a bold, walk-through installation marking the entrance to 5VIE’s Cavallerizze;  a new iteration of Re-Campaign, a bold, colourful and graphic collage of reclaimed material.

Originally designed to cover façades with a surface of up to 850 square metres, these industrial textiles carried commercial messages engineered for maximum visibility. For Milan Design Week, they are transformed into a vibrant architectural passage. Through cutting, layering, and re-composition, fragments of past campaigns form pixelated gradients and striking colour transitions that shift with light and movement.

Visitors don’t merely observe the material—they are invited to pass through it.

By turning promotional surfaces into spatial compositions, Re-Campaign repositions advertising fabric from spectacle to experience. What once functioned as background becomes foreground; what once demanded attention now creates space for reflection. The installation explores material transformation as a cultural act. By converting surfaces intended for commercial visual consumption into structures that demand bodily engagement, the project challenges how we experience images in public space.

“We were fascinated by the idea of reversing scale and intention,” say Ulrike and Paul. “These banners once functioned as background for commercial narratives. By cutting them up and recomposing them, we give them a new foreground — one that is physical, tactile, and open-ended.”

The panels combine pixelated fragments, graphic remnants and layered colour gradients. Through contrast, transparency and movement, the heavy-duty fabrics create shifting visual effects that respond to wind and light.

The project builds on studio mo man tai’s long-standing collaboration with large-format printing pioneer BIG Impact and market leaders in large format advertising blowUP media, whose canvasses are completely environmentally friendly; made of recycled PET bottles, PVC free and printed with water-based ink – blowUP media actively supports positive impact initiatives like this.

By transforming promotional surfaces into architectural passages, the installation reframes waste as resource and spectacle as spatial experience — inviting visitors not just to enter an exhibition, but to move through a reimagined material history.
